<image:caption>On Sago Lane, a public housing estate was built in the 1960s upon a street of funeral parlours or "death houses". Today, it is home to one of the highest concentrations of elderly in Singapore. A moving look at a little known aspect of the Chinese diaspora, this documentary profiles several elderly men and women who immigrated in the early 1900s, and who survived multiple waves of relocation and urban development. They now struggle to survive in a rapidly evolving city, while living out the rest of their days on a meagre public assistance. <image:caption>On Sago Lane in Chinatown, a public housing estate supports one of the highest concentrations of elderly immigrants in Singapore. Having survived successive waves of relocation and redevelopment, they now struggle to make sense of the rapidly evolving city as they live out the rest of their days on public assistance. Following several men and women who migrated as children to Singapore at the turn of the century, this documentary explores personal histories of migration, survival and aging.</image:caption>

The documentary features rare interviews with the band members, as well as the founders of the club. This work experiments with synesthesic compositions and a raw video noise aesthetic in response to the music. With Peter Kolovos, Andrew Maxwell, Douglas Russell, Ara Shirinyan and Jarrett Silberman. But as the rains intensify, a vow of secrecy forces her to embark on a quest of independence well beyond her years. In this gentle and delicate coming of age story, Chen-Hsi Wong's sensitive imagery and honest performances critically investigate horrifying memories of childhood within the paternal landscape of a swiftly evolving city-state. <image:title>In the Shadow of Trees - IN THE SHADOW OF TREES</image:title>
<image:caption>In the Shadow of Trees is my first solo photography show, presented at DECK gallery Singapore in 2015. With special thanks to Gwen Lee, Lee Huiqing and Leonard Yang. You see differently in the jungle. A long lens compresses space in a way it cannot in a room. Light affects organically. The world is palpitating. The jungle overwhelms. The pre-planned narrative is overthrown. Trees and monuments are much the same thing. They are actors in their own stage, and we marvel at their qualities of stillness, their poise and presence. The landscape need not come out to the audience. The audience is invited in.</image:caption>
